Łódź Design Festival
The first edition of the international design festival in Lodz took place in 2007. Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka joined a year later as Art Director and curator of the main programme exhibition, "Play&Joke". In the following years, until 2012, she participated in the growth of the festival, which from a local event became known as one of the biggest and most important design events in Central and Eastern Europe.
Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka curated the main programme exhibitions in the following editions: 2008: Play & Joke, 2009: Design Tales, 2010: Crumple Zone, 2011: Dziecinada. Polish Design for Children, 2012: Who Are You? (together with Klara Czerniewska).
The design festival in Lodz has a strictly curatorial character. The main programme exhibitions are focused on one theme, and are accompanied by conferences and panels divided into thematic blocks, as well as the festival's annual formats: "Make Me" and "Must Have".
"Make Me" is a contest for young designers organized since 2008, with the main prize of € 5,000 (20,000 PLN). "Must Have" is a plebiscite which aims to highlight and showcase the best Polish products available on the market, selected by an independent board of experts. After the first edition in 2011, the "Must Have" was presented during the Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2012. The edition of 2012 was presented there in April 2013, and then at the DMY in Berlin in June 2013. Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka is the Head of the Jury in both contests.
The notion of design, as understood by the organizers, has changed over time. We started from a review of current design practices, and currently take a more problematicized approach - in 2012 the main theme of the festival was Awareness, and in 2013 it will be Humanity.
